There is no 'public' ?

What does the public like? Why doesn't the public appreciate the arts? Why doesn't the public buy art? What sells (to the public)?

It seems like most art marketing conversations eventually include some comment on "what sells", "what doesn't sell", "what the public wants (or doesn't want)", etc.

Look around you! Where is this 'public' you speak of?

THERE IS NO PUBLIC!

Your potential market consists of hundreds of millions of Individuals and Small Groups, not a nameless 'public' mass. Each of these individual people and groups has their own needs and interests. Don't expect to appeal to them all, or even to most of them.

Instead, find those who you can truly relate to, and start a meaningful conversation about your vision!

We need to create our own "Tribe"

Yes! don't change your painting style to do what "sells", change your audience!
You have to create your "tribe" and till then...what?
Eventhought I painted all my life, I am a fairly new artist in this market.
Sold quite a bit in a gallery in Toronto, which closed three years ago. And since then I moved to a new city...and now ...nothing.
I am learnig all I can about eBay to sell my miniatures, but I would love a gallery to represent me for the large works. They have the "Buying-Followers' Tribe".
I just like to paint and not to worry about promotion.
Point.
